Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was a Swedish artist known for her innovative and spiritual works of art. He is considered one of the most important early abstract artists in the history of modern art.
Af Klint was born in Solna, Sweden in 1862. He studied art at the Royal Swedish School of Art in Stockholm and began making realist and naturalist paintings. However, in the early 20th century, he became interested in mysticism and the occult, which influenced his art.
Af Klint began a series of artworks known as "Paintings for the Temple" in 1906, which consisted of more than 100 enormous abstract paintings. These works, intended for use in a spiritual temple, explore themes such as the universe, life and death, and the relationship between humans and nature.
Despite his highly innovative work, af Klint was rarely exhibited at this time and much of his art was not recognized until decades after his death in 1944. It was not until 1986 that af Klint's works were first shown in Sweden and began to attract international attention. .
Some of Klint's notable works of art include "Group IX, No. 2, The Swan" (1915), "Group X, No. 2, Altarpiece" (1915), and "Group III, Evolution, No. 15" (1908) . His works continue to be the subject of study and art exhibitions worldwide, and he is recognized as one of the most significant artists in the history of modern art.
