Domenikos Theotokopoulos, better known as El Greco (1541-1614), was an artist from Greece who was active in Spain during the Renaissance and Mannerism. He is considered one of the most significant artists in the history of Western art.
El Greco was born in Crete, Greece, in 1541. He studied painting and gained experience as an artist in Crete, and then went to Italy in 1567 to learn more about the fine arts. He lived in Venice for some time before finally moving to Rome, where he worked under the renowned artist, Titian.
In 1577, El Greco moved to Spain and settled in Toledo. He gained fairly quick recognition in Spain, where his work received attention from many subscribers and fans. El Greco is known for his dramatic work, with the use of bright colors and sharp contrasts.
His works often feature figures from the religion and life of the Spanish people, in a style that is both innovative and unique. One of his famous works is "The Burial of the Count of Orgaz", a large painting depicting the burial of a Spanish nobleman.
El Greco died in Toledo in 1614, and although he was not always considered a respected artist of his time, his works were appreciated by many after him. His influence was strong on Romantic and Impressionist artists in the 19th century, and his work continues to be studied and influenced by artists today.
