Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1653) was an Italian artist of the Baroque period who is noted for his prominent work in portraits, historical paintings, and mythological paintings. She is also known for her dramatic life story as a female artist in a male-dominated age.
Gentileschi was born in Rome, Italy in 1593, the daughter of the inlay artist Orazio Gentileschi. Her father was her teacher and trainer in art, and Artemisia began studying painting as a child. He showed great talent in painting, and soon attracted the attention of famous people in Rome.
At the age of 17, Gentileschi was sexually assaulted by a friend of his father, an artist named Agostino Tassi. His father took the case to court, and Gentileschi was subjected to a medical examination and brutal interrogation. Even though he was incredibly traumatized during the trial, Gentileschi won the case and Tassi was sentenced.
After the case, Gentileschi continued his career as an artist. She became known for paintings featuring strong and independent women, such as "Judith Slaying Holofernes" and "Cleopatra". He also painted famous portraits, including one of himself.
Gentileschi moved to Florence in 1614 and then to Venice in 1620. He continued to paint and won many awards from his patrons. Gentileschi's work is often considered one of the finest examples of Baroque art and influenced many other artists.
Gentileschi died in 1653, in Naples, Italy. Although her work during her lifetime was often not appreciated as well, in the 20th century, Gentileschi's work became highly regarded and recognized as one of the greatest female artists in art history.
